Program Overview
The Department of Art - one of five academic departments and programs in the School of the Arts and Architecture - offers two degree programs (B.A. in Art, M.F.A. in Art) as well as options for summer study. Each of the department’s programs provides an environment that fosters creativity, autonomy, and experimentation. Students are exposed to a broad range of approaches to making and interpreting art, as well as diverse perspective on the role of art and artists in society. The department empowers students to reshape their worlds through critical inquiry and transformative creativity.
Undergraduate Studies
- B.A. degree program in Art
- Includes coursework in all six studio areas (Ceramics, Interdisciplinary Studio, New Genres, Painting and Drawing, Photography, and Sculpture).
- Students complete art history and critical theory courses, as well as general education coursework from academic fields across the UCLA campus
- Program serves approximately 215 undergraduate Art majors
Graduate Studies
- M.F.A. degree program in Art
- Students select a primary area (Ceramics, Interdisciplinary Studio, New Genres, Painting and Drawing, Photography, and Sculpture) and have opportunities to work with faculty from all areas of study, and across academic fields
- UCLA Margo Leavin Graduate Art Studios are located off campus in Culver City
- Program serves approximately 40 graduate Art students
Summer Art Institute
- Intensive studio-based program specifically designed for high school artists
- Offers UCLA college credit
Summer Sessions
- A selection of UCLA Department of Art courses are offered to Art majors, non-majors and students from other institutions, during summer terms
